Non-Invasive Ventilation

🫁 Non-Invasive Ventilation is a method of delivering oxygen which usually uses a face mask. It is termed ‘non-invasive’ because it uses a tightly fitted mask or helmet without the need for intubation (i.e. a tube down the patient’s throat)

🚬 NIV is used in a number of medical conditions including COPD, which is a common condition affecting the lungs and it typically seen in smokers.

🦠NIV was also suggested as a treatment for COVID-19 where there were shortages of invasive ventilation equipment. However, NIV comes with risks for caregivers as poorly fitted masks may emit aerosols.
